Zero-Down Solar for Nonprofits: How It Actually Works

If your nonprofit has been told solar isn't possible without upfront capital, this guide is for you. Most nonprofit solar programs assume you can put 10 to 30 percent down. Most banks won't lend to nonprofits without personal guarantees from board members. RE-volv's recoverable grant covers 100 percent of upfront cost, you pay a fixed monthly amount typically lower than your current utility bill from day one. No banks, no personal guarantees, no catch.

The financing gap most nonprofits hit

You've probably been here:

  1. You realize solar would help your nonprofit, both financially and mission-wise.
  2. You ask for quotes. They're $30,000-$300,000 or more.
  3. You ask the bank. They want personal guarantees from board members and 5-10 year loan terms.
  4. You ask about PPAs. They're available for big customers, not nonprofits in your size range.
  5. You give up. Solar is "for someday."

Roughly half of all nonprofits in the U.S. fall into this gap. The financing system was designed for homeowners and for-profit businesses, not 501(c)(3)s without taxable income.

How recoverable grants close the gap

RE-volv's recoverable grant model works like this:

  1. RE-volv covers 100% of installation cost, equipment, design, permits, labor, everything.
  2. Your nonprofit pays a fixed monthly amount, typically 15-30% lower than your current utility bill.
  3. Over the agreement term (15-20 years), those payments are recovered and reinvested into the next nonprofit's solar project.
  4. You retain ownership benefits long-term, at the end of the agreement, the system is yours free and clear.

That's it. Zero upfront. Predictable monthly cost. No banks. No personal guarantees. The "recoverable" piece is what makes this sustainable: your payments fund the next nonprofit.

Where the money comes from

RE-volv is funded by:

  • Climate-conscious individuals who invest in our recoverable grant fund (a form of impact investing)
  • Foundations and impact investors aligned with climate justice
  • Recovered payments from earlier nonprofit partners (the revolving fund mechanism)

That funding base is why we don't need to charge what for-profit solar operators charge, and why our payments to your nonprofit are typically 10-30% lower than commercial PPAs.

"What's the catch?", common skepticism, real answers

"This sounds too good to be true."

It's mission-driven, not magic. We give up some economics that for-profit solar operators charge for. The catch (if there is one): we're more selective about which nonprofits we accept, and the application process takes longer than commercial solar.

"Why would funders agree to this?"

Climate-aligned funders increasingly look for ways to deploy capital with measurable impact that recovers and recycles. RE-volv provides exactly that, funders see capital deploy on multiple solar projects over 15-20 years, with measurable CO₂ avoidance and community impact metrics.

"What if our nonprofit struggles?"

Our underwriting is conservative, we work with established 501(c)(3)s with operating histories. If a partner nonprofit struggles mid-agreement, the system stays installed. Successor or merged organizations inherit a system that's already saving money.

What you don't need

To go solar with RE-volv, you do NOT need:

  • A capital reserve or down payment
  • A bank loan
  • Personal guarantees from board members
  • Significant credit history
  • A tax appetite (we don't use tax credits, they're not relevant for tax-exempt nonprofits)
  • Major fundraising

What you DO need:

  • 501(c)(3) status
  • Building or land you own (or have long-term site control over)
  • A roof or land that can host solar (south, east, or west exposure; minimal shade)
  • Basic operating history (~2-3 years minimum)
  • Board willing to approve a 15-20 year agreement

The application process

  1. Apply, 5-minute application. We don't ask for financial documents at this stage.
  2. Eligibility, we confirm 501(c)(3) status, building/site control, and program fit.
  3. Free assessment, solar engineer reviews your building, energy use, and roof or site.
  4. Proposal, full project terms with monthly payment, projected savings, and timeline.
  5. Board approval, we provide board-ready documentation.
  6. Installation, local installer. 3-6 months.
  7. Operation, bills drop from day one. 25+ years of clean energy.

Total timeline from application to operating solar: 6-12 months.
