Elective Pay

A Game Changer for Equitable Solar Access

Inflation Reduction Act

What is Elective Pay?

Elective Pay is a provision of the Inflation Reduction Act that allows tax-exempt entities to receive federal solar tax credits as a direct cash refund. Nonprofits can reduce 30% or more of their solar project costs.

2026 Updates

Federal solar benefits are still available for nonprofit solar projects, however, requirements and timeline are shifting. Starting in 2026, all projects that begin construction must comply with Prohibited Foreign Entity restrictions to receive the full 30% payment and may have a shorter timeframe to have the project placed in service.

Projects that begin construction before July 4, 2026 have up to four years to be placed in service and qualify for Elective Pay.

RE-volv helps you navigate these requirements to ensure your project receives maximum savings.

How RE-volv Maximizes Your Savings

RE-volv combines philanthropic capital with federal incentives to provide solar for zero money down. Because RE-volv is a fellow 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we can use Elective Pay to deepen the impact for every partner we serve.

For RE-volv Owned Systems (Lease or PPA)

As the system owner, RE-volv handles all IRS filings and pre-registration for Elective Pay. We then pass federal savings to you through significantly lower monthly electricity rates. You receive the financial benefit of the tax credit without the administrative burden of filing with the IRS.

For Nonprofit-Owned Systems (Loan)

If your organization owns the system, we provide the technical guidance and documentation needed to file for Elective Pay yourself. We'll show you how Elective Pay savings are projected to impact your energy bills once you file for and receive your Elective Pay payment for the solar investment tax credit.
