Desert Garden United Church of Christ installs 114 solar panels, generating 100% of the church's energy and saving $14,000 annually on electricity costs.
Sun City West, Arizona – February 24 — Desert Garden United Church of Christ has completed installation of a 47 kW solar array comprising 114 solar panels. The system generates 100% of the church's energy requirements and is projected to save $14,000 annually on electricity costs — totaling approximately $700,000 over the life of the system. The installation will avoid CO2 emissions equivalent to removing approximately 300 vehicles from roads annually.
"Our decision to go solar represents our commitment to preserving and protecting God's beautiful creation through being good stewards," said Pastor Bill.
State Senator Lauren Kuby remarked: "With its year-round abundance of sun, Arizona could be the solar capital of the country."
The $14,000 in annual savings enables the church to expand community programs. In 2024, the congregation donated over $25,000 and operates initiatives including the Cycles of Kindness bicycle program for low-income schools and homeless shelters, plus citrus gleaning partnerships with St. Mary's Food Bank.
"RE-volv is proud to support Desert Gardens United Church of Christ in going solar," said Andreas Karelas, Executive Director of RE-volv.
RE-volv provided zero-down financing for the project. Capital Energy served as the solar installation contractor. Educational partners at the celebration event included Solar United Neighbors, Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans, and Arizona Interfaith Power & Light.
